Goodbye Winter!

I am officially saying goodbye to winter and all the gloves and hats that go with it! I took one of my classes to the Oregon District this winter to teach them about depth of field and shot this along the way. I was inspired by Rodney Urton of Blackholephoto.com. Rodney has quite a series of self portraits with a street photography feel that I was reminded of as I passed this window.

Interview with photographer Julie Roberts!

Before I moved from Tennessee to Ohio, I was lucky enough to have had a chance to get to know Julie of Julie Roberts Photography. She is one of the warmest people I have ever met and so easy to talk to! The first time we met we became instant friends and even ended up running around scouting for new locations until the sun went down. I have watched her grow leaps and bounds in a very short time as a photographer, so when I decided to start my series of interviews she was my first choice. I am so interested in the fact that each photographer's path is different, that I decided to start interviewing photographers. I wrote the questions down that I would want to hear the answer to and before I knew it, I was on the phone with Julie interviewing her. Since I started teaching photography, I find it even more important for new photographers to realize one simple truth. That when you are being hard on yourself and wishing you were shooting better, that is just confirmation that you are in the right profession. :)

Do you remember taking your first image? No, but I do remember my first camera which was given to me by my grand-daddy when his brother died. (the camera belonged to my great uncle Jimmy.) It was just a point and shoot but I loved taking it everywhere I went!

When did you learn the basics of photography? My sophomore year of college when I took Photography 101.

What first attracted you (specifically) to becoming a photographer? Even when I was really young I felt a certain responsibility to document moments. It came from an almost-fear that if I didn’t photograph something I would forget it later.

Who is your mentor in photography? I think I would have to say Nicholas Nixon. I learned about him from a lecture in college and I was so thrilled to see that he did really beautiful and interesting photos of his children and family. My favorite subject was always people and more specifically my family and baby nephews. But my professor had given me a hard time about them being considered “good” or “art”. He made a great point – that just because they were special to me didn’t make them interesting photographs. I had come to believe that photos of children and family couldn’t also be beautiful works of art that a perfect stranger would find interesting. Nick Nixon’s work opened my eyes to that possibility.

Which is easier for you...the technical or the creative? Creative!

Do you see yourself as an artist? Yes, but it’s not without hesitation that say that. Regardless of that little voice of doubt I really want to make every effort to do something that is more than just “taking pictures”.

Where are you in your development as a photographer? Never “there”. Constantly seeing things that I need to change, improve, and try.

What is your favorite part of photography? Least favorite? My favorite thing is catching one of those really honest moments between two people like a huge laugh, a tear, a look of surprise or any expression that is fleeting and significant. I get really excited when I get lucky and catch a moment like that especially when I get it in focus with a good exposure!
My least favorite thing about what I do is the sales side of business. Whether I am “selling” myself or whether I am dealing with someone else who is selling something to me … I just don’t like anything that feels insincere. Ugh!

Where do you get your inspiration? With fear of sounding really cheesy … the truth is that I am most inspired by people who are seriously in love and aren’t ashamed or afraid to show it. It could be a couple so happy together they just shine or a set of brand new parents who are just madly in love with their brand new baby. I think it’s those relationships and that kind of amazing love that makes life really special. It’s the only thing I have ever found worth photographing.

Who influences your photography the most? I think I am most influenced by my clients and how they interact with each other.

How do you prepare for a shoot? Make sure my batteries are charged! I don’t have any kind of significant “pre-game” dance that I do.

What is your strength as a photographer? I think my strength is my ability to put people at ease. People look better in pictures when they aren’t behaving like there is a camera in their face. So it can be a challenge but I think I do a good job at getting even the most non-photogenic person to relax and look pretty great.

What area do you want to work on as a photographer? Off-camera-lighting. Ahh!

Do you shoot for yourself? When and what? My favorite things to photograph are the details and the portraits of the bride and groom. I’m usually able to work in what I want through out the day. I always encourage my clients to set aside time for those portraits of the two of them and by the time we get to those I usually know what I want to do. Most of my clients trust me and I feel lucky because I’ve rarely ever had an instance where someone told me “no, I wont do that.”

What tip or trick did you learn that was the biggest help to you as a new photographer? My college professor once gave me hell over this photo I had taken of the front of a building from the ground up. He wanted to know why I had taken a picture of that building and my only answer was that I liked it. He went on and said “What specifically did you like about it?” To which I answered “The door knobs, the gates, the window sills, the color, everything.” And he explained that a simple photo from the front didn’t say anything about my specific point of view. He encouraged me to think about how I could have photographed that building in a way that most people don’t already see it. His advice completely changed the way I looked at things. I no longer saw something and photographed it because I liked it … I began to ask myself why I liked it … and it changed the way I wanted to photograph things. I think that’s when I really began to develop my point of view – which is kind of the same thing as saying that’s when I became an artist.

What one mistake that you've learned from that you can share to help new photographers? I jumped into the wedding industry with no guidance. As a result I made a lot of mistakes. Dumb ones. I advise new photographers to find a mentor or someone they can learn from instead of going at it alone. There are a lot of established photographers who need help and there is no reason to start out in the dark.

Why did you choose this particular image of yourself vs. another one for this interview? Because it hides my double chin!

If you weren't a photographer, what would you do? Be an actor or a teacher.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? I sure do love the sunlight in California!!!

TIPS & TRICKS FOR NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS

Camera tip/trick: Shoot in mid-day back lighting … with a wide open aperture and a super low ISO. This is my favorite kind of magical light!

PS tip/trick: Totally Rad Actions by the Boutwells.

Marketing tip/trick: Let who you are be the consistent thread that runs through your work and your brand. YOU are the only thing that makes your business special so just embrace that and go forward.

Up to Know-Good...

Well, winter is almost over and so is my hiatus from blogging. I have been putting some time and thought not only into recharging my batteries, but also into some new ideas. When I think about what I want to do with my life as a person and as a photographer; the list is long, but exciting. So far in 2010, I am off to a good start. In a couple of weeks, I will be moving to a bigger place that will allow me to shoot inside more often. There will be more room for having friends over and working with even more talented people in my area. I am also looking forward to seeing Norah Jones, Cracker, and possibly Sheryl Crow in concert. Yeah! I love music. If that wasn't enough, I just found out that there is an increasing chance of meeting a couple photographers this summer while I am visiting my family on the west coast. Another Yeah! So those are all in the future...what about now? Today I started the planning process for a few shoots (editorial, fashion, bridal) that I've wanted to do for myself. It's amazing how many people I have met this year that I would like to work with and it's finally coming together. Last, but not least, I also had the opportunity to interview fellow photographer Julie of Julie Roberts Photography! I will be posting the interview on my blog as soon as I can. I learned quite a bit of new information about Julie including some photography tips and tricks that she is willing to share, so be sure to visit again for the full interview.

I've been thinking quite a bit about a class I was lucky enough to teach this quarter called Photo Techniques and Aesthetics. In this class you explore different themes and processes to get yourself to think outside of the box. This particular group of students have done very well with their projects and they have left an impact on me. :) I am posting a picture from a demonstration I did using a grid to show a single image with many frames. I am very excited to see their work on the wall at the end of the quarter!

Anyone who know Krissy and Mark, knows that they love running around in the Honda S2000! I am so glad it worked out to take their car under the bridge for this shot. They say when it rains on your wedding day that it's good luck. Krissy and Mark should have plenty of good luck because it rained the whole time we were taking pictures in downtown Knoxville! We had so much fun, none of us really cared! We just kept shooting, and shooting, and shooting some more! You can hardly tell how much rain there was, but I am glad to say that my gear held up nicely. Different types of weather make for interesting images and I love all the reflections in the Old City and in front of the Riviera Theater (two of their favorite hangouts). :)

What can I say? These kids are beautiful. You've seen them on here before when they were younger and thankfully I get to keep shooting them as they grow up!! Since they are so easy to work with, towards the end I tested out a few different cameras and lenses side by side. I haven't come to any definite conclusions yet, but I will keep you posted. One of the best parts about being a wedding photographer is getting to know so many cool people. This is especially true when it comes to Kate & Jared. They are interesting and fun each on their own, but together they are truly amazing! You can't help but have a good time when you are with them and you can see that they are so into each other. I love the look on Jared's face in the second image. :) They were very open to any ideas and I have to say that the forth image is one of my all time personal favorite shots of my photography career. The kids can't get enough of them! Thanks for letting me try new places!!! Well, it finally happened. My good friend Faye of Photography by Faye Sommer and I got together to hang out, try out different equipment, and shoot for fun! We jumped in the car and made it about 50ft before we jumped back out of the car to start shooting. :) It was nice to take some time to problem solve some ideas that I have floating around in my head. Kate & Jared's Engagement Session

For me, photographing Kate and Jared was an ideal situation. They let me try anything and we went EVERYWHERE!! They were open to try so many ideas and just play. The fire escape was a little tricky, but we made it! After many laughs and similar tastes in music there is no doubt that we will be hanging out some more. The restaurant you see is Madison's Bistro on Far Hills in Dayton. Anyone who knows me, knows I am a picky eater...but I love their food and am always plotting a return trip as soon as possible. Madison's Bistro is also a part of Truffles Catering. If you are a future bride be sure to check them out!

Andrea & Patrick's Engagement Session

Andrea and Patrick are officially engaged! It was a wet day, so we did a quick photo shoot, but I have a feeling we will be shooting again when it gets warmer. We had a great time scouting locations and ended up in the Mt. Adams area of Cincinnati. I couldn't decide which I liked better on a few of the images towards the end, so I posted both versions. Leave a comment and let me know which you like better between 12 and 13 or 14 and 15. The last image was taken at a beautiful wine bar in the Mt. Adams. I want to say a special Congratulations!! to Andrea and Patrick and say a BIG THANK YOU for a great dinner and night out in Cincinnati. I had a blast hanging out with you!

In order to make more room for current teachers aides at the Ohio Institute of Photography, some older teaching aides had to go. It was so strange to see so many slides in one place and reading the labels on the slidetrays for classes that don't exist anymore. Is it ironic that I find slides photogenic? :)

Getting ready for 2009!

It has snowed enough in Ohio that I got to use my 4-wheel drive today. Whoohoo! The thought of a snow day blows my mind since it was not that bad in Tennessee the last several years. With the move I had a chance to do a major "Pre-Spring Cleaning" and getting ready for 2009! It has been an intense four months since I moved to Ohio, but with understanding friends, family, and clients I have been catching up leaps and bounds. Now that things are put away and sorted I am starting to enjoy working on some personal photography and as always pushing myself to grow as an artist. Later this year I am very excited about putting more time and effort into using dramatic lighting on location. Until then I want to post a few photography non-sequiturs so to speak of shots I see along the way. Soon I would like to introduce some of the new talent that will be assisting me this year at weddings, portrait shoots, and behind the scenes. I can't introduce them without some fun/embarrassing images, so I will save that until later. Here is a silly one of me for you to laugh at until I can get them on here.

Wallace & then some...

Wallace is a friend of mine's dog that is 5'11" and 6'4" with his hair. He is a handful and reminds me of the dog in Marley & Me. He is so smart that I bet he will be driving when he turns 16. I have always wanted to shoot in Cincinnati and yesterday I finally had my chance. Tina and I have been trying to get together for a shoot either in Tennessee or in Ohio for a while and since I moved up here it made it quite a bit more convenient to get a shoot together. Not only is this the first shoot in Cincinnati, but it was the first time I met her family. They are troopers in the cold and good sports all around. Anyone whose been on a shoot with me knows that I am never quite finished. One more shot...one more...:) My favorite moment of the day is when their son Michael looked at me with an expression like Ralphie straight out of "The Christmas Story". With that red sweater and hilarious expression I was half expecting him to tell me all about a Red Ryder BB Gun. :)

Christine & Todd's Engagement Session

It was SO COLD the weekend of our shoot (25 degrees F) that I cut the fingers out of my gloves so I could hold my camera, but these two are so into each other it didn't matter. Todd can pick Christine up with his little finger and swing her around like Raggedy Ann. He's like He-Man, with a sense of humor! It's no wonder Todd fell for Christine because she has a contagious laughter that puts a smile everyone's face. I am so happy that these two found each other!

For those of you, (Gwen) who thought I fell off the face of the earth, here's some proof that I am alive and kicking. :) I have been adjusting at warp speed to teaching and moving with a few trips back to Tennessee to shoot engagement sessions! Luckily I have wonderful friends here to help me settle in. I also have wonderful friends in Tennessee checking in on me and some long lost friends that are now getting married! I haven't had the luxury of spending much time with Jacque and Matt the last few years, but it was certainly my loss. These two are so funny together that it was actually a difficult shoot because we were all laughing so much. Matt you are so quick and witty... I really miss your sense of humor. The first time Matt introduced me to Jacque, I knew they would get married. She has such a great energy and makes everyone comfortable with her storytelling. They were so at ease together that I knew it was just a matter of time. Their dalmatian "Fenway" is so cute he makes me want to photograph dogs everyday. The look on his face in the first picture cracks me up!

Moving to Ohio!

Hi there,
Just wanted to let you know that I was recently contacted about a full-time position teaching at the photography school that I went to in Dayton, Ohio (OIP&T-Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology). I was already going to a workshop with Audrey Woulard in Chicago, IL, so I was able to interview on the way there and 2nd interview on the way back. As soon as I got to Tennessee the school called and we worked out a deal, so I will be moving with the truck on Friday October 3rd. My great friends came over and packed my apartment for me while I finished up my photo shoots on the computer. It was shocking how many people offered to help and actually showed up and did a great job. I have a few days now in the middle of the week to think over how I am going to deal with the business and catch up on my bookkeeping and then Michelle and Steve (best friends) will drive down from Ohio to help me drive my Jeep up and I'll drive the truck. For those of you wondering why I didn't get a car dolly...the answer is: they don't make one for my Jeep. I start on October 6th and I will be teaching Camera Skills, Candid Wedding, and Fashion this quarter. I will teach a variety of classes throughout the year. I will also work part-time with a couple photographers in the area on the side. I'm not sure how I am going to deal with moving my business, but I am not really worried about it. God has had his hand in this every step of the way. Now I can see all the different things He had in place to make this move so smooth. I shoot weddings out-of-state anyway, so this won't be much different. I will still be able to do everything pretty much the same as if I were here. I had my going away party last night and I have had several people stop by to say goodbye, so I feel like I am really leaving now. I'm sure it will hit me after I move that all this has happened, like it did when I moved to Tennessee. My first night in Tennessee I thought...What have I done? :) Everyone knows that I have always seen myself somewhere else, so maybe I will have more time to have fun if I don't take on a lot of part-time work. We will see. :)

Mitchell, Austin, & Emma on the Move!

Here are some fun shots from the kids mini-session I did of Mitchell, Austin, & Emma! Mitchell is at that stage where there are 3 or 4 expressions in a couple seconds so you have to keep watching closely. Austin is ready to run, run, and run some more which made the "Bee Shots" great! Emma is reminding me of her mom so much right now I had to hold back the laughter. I'm very glad we were able to finally get together!

Super-sized Not-So- Sneak Peak of Michelle & Dustin's Wedding!

Michelle and Dustin have been plotting and planning their wedding for quite awhile and it was so wonderful to see all come together so beautifully. Their wedding took place at Brother's Cove Resort where they were able to get ready in the cabins, along with have the ceremony and reception at the lodge. The weather was perfect along with the message delivered by Dan Netherland. I found it a little difficult to take pictures when there are tears in your eyes for more than a couple seconds. :) I want to say a special congratulations to Michelle and Dustin! I've enjoyed getting to know you over the years and it's especially great when I get to see you reach such important milestones in your life. I wish you so much happiness!

Here is a sneak peak of one of my all time favorite models...Faviola. Today was the first day of my "What's in Your Toolbox?" Workshop with Richard Pedrelli. I met Richard about a month ago and he asked if I would do a workshop with him and the day if finally here. Richard drove up from Atlanta and will be here for one more day to try out all the new ideas that are now in his toolbox. He shot his butt off and here are several of his images. We will be up all night at this rate. :)

Let me introduce you to the Mr. & Mrs. Olave! One of the most interesting things for me to see at a wedding is the how and why two people are together. Leah and Louis's reasons were obvious. These two really know how to have fun together and really bring out the best in each other. The cake feeding pictures are hilarious and so much fun! I found this at Staples the other day and I flipped out. I have always wanted this poster and it was only $6 bucks! It's such a great movie. This is the third thing that I have found at Staples that I can't find anywhere else. The last one was the song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Louis Armstrong. NO ONE ELSE HAD IT!

A Mini-Workshop

I have recently meet a very cool photographer from Atlanta named Richard Pedrelli. Richard has had a long career in computers and is now learning and loving photography. He has an incredible mind and is just the sort of person that has taken the time to research things before he gives advice. I called him recently to get some advice on photographing a rodeo that I am shooting in September and we became fast friends. Richard and I have planned a mini-workshop to help him with his photography and he is helping me with getting the most of out my computer and saving me tons of time by sharing things that he has researched. I am looking forward to working together on some fun artwork pieces. I am posting one of Richard's favorites from my website that I took in San Fransisco from the Golden Gate bridge (not the crow's nest)! Quite a few people ask me that. :) This one's for you Richard!

I wish I had a week to photograph these two. I would like to do an entire shoot of super silly facial expressions and poses...maybe even some costumes. As for this shoot, there were so many I wanted to play with in PS that I forgot to eat dinner. I love the blue!!

Every once in awhile I get to shoot a wedding in Ohio with my great friend Carmen of blink of an eye photography. Jessica and Dan's wedding was in Cincinnati, and they had a special meeting before their evening wedding to take some pictures fun pictures in Mt. Echo Park. To keep the tradition of not seeing the bride in her dress before she came down the aisle, Jessica had a second "REAL" dress for the actual ceremony which really surprised Dan! I have never heard of anyone doing this, but it totally got him.

Summer Bella

Heather called me awhile back to schedule shoots of Bella at 6 months, 9 months, and a one year and I have to say...what a good mom! :) So far scheduling and good weather have worked out well! This is Bella at 9 months welcoming summer at Splash Country and then hanging out at my house. Bella has learned that if she rolls the football away from her, Heather will chase it. Needless to say, this was a long game. It was worth it, because this was a special shot for Heather's husband Jay's birthday present. He had figured out every other present and this was the last chance to surprise him. Bella is one happy little girl. I would have NEVER guessed that spraying water in her face would make her laugh over and over. Good thing Heather did. I love how much Heather enjoys being a mom and enjoys Bella. Before I know it, Bella will be one year and I will be sure to post more pics. We are both October babies, I'm just a little older. :)

Headshots for this little girl? YES! Aubrey is winning so many contests that she is headed to Las Vegas. Kids are always quick on their feet, but I have to say that she moves faster than anyone I've ever photographed. Luckily there were plenty in focus to choose from! One thing I have learned about Aubrey...she loves to throw rocks. :)

Do you remember being 11 years old? Me either! Kelsey won't be able to forget because I took so many pictures. She is not only beautiful, but also has such a soulful, yet friendly look in her eyes. Everywhere we went on our shoot, we ran into funny dogs, so I started shooting them. I am going to start a series called the Dog Days of Summer!

Every once in awhile I get to run into my little neighbor, Aubrey. Today she was off to the pool and she let me snap a few shots before heading for the water. I photographed her at 9 mths when she could barely sit up. Now she's wearing pink crocs with a matching hat and making waves at the big girl pool. :)

These two are such good sports! I took them all over town and then some. I think we got some interesting and different shots for this unique couple. This is especially challenging since Julie of Julie Roberts Photography, is an awesome photographer herself! Fred helps Julie quite a bit with the business, but when you talk to him you will find out quickly he is one of the last great writer/poets of our time. Between these two artists, I'm sure their wedding will be one of a kind!

I recently got back from another trip to Ohio where I did everything from
shooting a wedding with my great friend Carmen Nauseef of blinkofaneyephotography in Dayton, to photographing Aronoff, Rosen, & Hunt Law Firm in Cincinnati. I even got to practice some fun photography techniques with my best friends Michelle and Steve and of course their awesome dogs Zoe (the Boston Terrier) and Celeste (the Ohio Mutt. She prefers Pretty Girl). The expressions you can get from dogs makes me want to start a new series.

Here are some images I never posted from my trip to the Northern California a couple of years ago. I wish I had them at a higher resolution, but I thought I would share them in spite of that. The first image is of Big Sur, CA and the second is of an area called Paradise Point in the state park nearby. The forth image of of the famous surf spot called "The Mavericks". It doesn't look to intimidating on this particular day, does it. :)

US Magazine Lighting Project

I have been looking at US magazine for years and have always wanted to master outdoor flash with the same dramatic feel that I keep seeing in their publication. My "patient friend" Jennifer Breeden and my "always ready assistant" Nancy Shelton helped me to finally take some time and hammer out the details of how to do this. Jennifer is known for her expressive face, however the mood of the lighting lended itself to the more serious shots. I threw in one smiling, because that is just simply Jen. Thank you both for taking your free time to help me with this year's first personal project.

Returning from Myrtle Beach

Home again, home again! I just got back from Myrtle Beach, SC where I spent some time with my family and a couple friends. It was cold and windy, but so clear and beautiful I had to get my camera out and take a few shots. Things have changed over the years in Myrtle Beach and there is new construction everyday. Our extended family stayed here every other summer for several years while I was growing up. I miss those days. My cousins and I have all grown up and there is a new generation visiting Sunset Beach, NC which is very cool too. I enjoyed getting to look back at Myrtle Beach with my dad and remember what it used to look like. I am only included one picture because my dad is not known for patience in front of the camera. I'm surprised he humored me at all. My dad loves his Rockport shoes. :)

Scouting locations has always been one of my favorite parts of being a photographer. I recently drove over to Sampson's Hollow to see one of my future wedding locations and to watch the sun go down. I can't wait to add the bride and groom!

Workshop with the McLellans!

I am just surfacing from a great visit with Mel and Sean McLellan of McLellan Studio in Franklin, TN. Mel and Sean are a husband and wife photography team that really define the word team. It was great watching them shoot and process the images at the same time. Mel's list of strengths are endless, but I keep thinking about how much energy she puts into making sure you feel comfortable. Sean will eventually be known as the Secret Ninja Photographer because he is shooting from every angle when you least expect it, keeping everything natural. I know this first hand because they photographed me for use on my blog. Being on the opposite side of the camera is always a good experience, making me remember how it feels to be one of my clients. I appreciate their advice, talent, and warmth! Thank you guys! Here are a few of the images from the session:

A Room Without A View

Today I am lucky enough to be cleaning out a large room at a good friend's house. Most people would not be too excited to say that, but this will be a new studio space for me. I plan to keep all of my shooting on location, but keep this space to make a mess and leave it. A space for me. Honestly this will be my new place to take ebay pictures! Ha! I used to shoot commercial and sometimes I miss it, so this will give me a chance to shoot some promotional items or sample shots of albums. My friend is even going to let me paint it. How great is that? Nancy is not just a good friend, she's a great assistant and incredible costume designer. Her house is more like a shop of all sorts. I think Santa's elves would like it over there. So a special thanks to Nancy for giving me a great room without a view! :) Maybe when it's fixed up I will throw some pics up.

Price Change and Resurfacing

Thanks for stopping by the blog! Your comments keep me going! I am currently being harassed by a good friend of mine to update my blog more often. She's right. It's good to have strong mentors! You know who you are. I'm been on blog hiatus getting my new prices organized. I think every photographer disappears in the winter to do this. My new prices are updated on the web and I am excited about not only shooting weddings and seniors, but also shooting more personal projects that I plan to unveil on the blog. I have had so many fun ideas piling up since I decided to start the business, that now I plan to make time to shoot those ideas and share them with you! I titled this post Price Change and Resurfacing because I am just now resurfacing from my trip to Ohio and Missouri. I love to go to Ohio because that's where most of my photography friends are. It's a great chance to compare notes and sort through new ideas. My best friend Michelle is always there to support me and problem solve with me. She would make a great counselor because she is such a good listener. Her husband Steve is a part-time secret ninja that can fix any problem you don't feel like dealing with and he makes it look effortless. Their dogs are also supportive by checking on you several times a day and seeing if you need a break to play fetch or tug of war. I spent most of my time in Missouri visiting family and former co-workers at the commercial studio, Rockafellow Photography. We had so much to catch up on. I get to see more of my family in Myrtle Beach, SC later this month. I realize this is February, but any chance to be at the beach is good for me. I will be playing catch up on housekeeping things for the business for awhile, but my goals are in place and it's going to be a great year!
